The Artful Bodger's Home Foundry

            Recommendations

A page listing links, companies I've dealt with and books I've found useful.

.

There are hundreds of good web sites out there dealing with home foundry work, I'm only listing ones I have had personal dealings with.

     Attention all Gingery lathe fans!

Marvin Guthrie has written "Back Gears for the Gingery Lathe" which is published by Dave J Gingery Publishing LLC. Or Marv can be contacted directly at marvinbarb@yahoo.com This book will turn a very good tool into a great tool and is essential for anyone who has or is intending to build a Gingery lathe. It would be madness not to buy this book and fit these to your lathe!

David is someone who's casting and model engineering skills I've admired for a long time, many of my customers have also been impressed with what he's doing and the wonderfully informative video's he has on you tube.

So it with my highest recommendation (even though he doesn't use my furnace design!) that you have a good look at what he's up to.

Nebojsa and Tamara are true artists! Tamara in pottery and Nebojsa in metal work. He makes a lot of his (and her) tools and products and this site deserves a look! Nebojsa and I have become firm friends (see him in my guest gallery), although we have never met, the wonders of modern comunication!

.

Spike's link

wwwspicrosoft.com/Heater/Heater1.htm

This is Spike's waste oil heater, for those of you wanting to heat somewhere, not melt something. Although I haven't built one my self, Nebojsa (see guest gallery or link above) has and tells me it's very good!

.

www.bodyscape.net.nz I'm no artist, this man is! Bronze castings and a book is now available as well, got to be worth a look.

www.backyardmetalcasting.com

Lionel's site has probably encouraged more people to start metal casting than any other. "keep it simple, keep it cheap" would seem to be his philosophy, and it works! Lots of varied information, books for beginers, even D.I.Y. propane furnace kits. A "must have a look at site."

.

Kansas Brass

You've got to look at what  Stephan's up to here, fantastic casting and lots of useful information on his casting journey

 Where to get foundry materials

.

As  you've probably gathered from this site, I keep my metal casting as cheap as possible, therefore I don't deal with many companies. These I can recommend as good companies for the humble home caster to deal with, none are close to me so all my dealings have been mail order.

Hoben Int. Ltd.  Spencroft Rd., Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, ST5 9JE.  Tel.01782-383000

www.hoben.co.uk

Very good prices for Salamander crucibles, also a good supplier for investment / lost wax casting supplies (something I'm just starting with, and they've been very helpful). They'll keep my business!

John Winter and Co.  P.O. Box 21, Washer Lane Works, Halifax. Tel 01422-3642

Believe it or not, a foundry suppliers who have a model enginering dept. so they will supply smaller quantities of foundry "goodies" to the likes of us.

  Call them for a catalogue.

 Purimachos   Unfortunately they have gone out of business, but two of their staff have set up another company dealing with refractory products. Since one of these people is the person I've always dealt with I will recommend them whole heartedly, they are;

Books

I love books, forget ebooks! Even with a lap top you can't get the same enjoyment as sitting in a quiet place and burying your nose in a book!

.

 Camden Miniature Steam Services

Barrow Farm, Rode, Frome, Somerset, BA11 6PS.

www.camdenmin.co.uk

Not a book, but where to buy them. A great selection of books on a wide range of practical subjects, virtually every "workshop book" I've bought has come from them, fast friendly service!

.

Dave and Vince Gingery's Books

www.gingerybooks.com

Dave was responsible for getting me started in home foundry work, my wife will never forgive him!

Having read books written by both father and son, I can only say I would be very surprised if you were disappointed with any of them!

.

Foundry Work For The Amateur and The Backyard foundry.  B. Terry Aspin

I have both of these books and although they "overlap" in their information, I'm glad I bought them both. Very good information on casting, pattern making and cores.
